Not only are they exceptionally beautiful, but they’re also extremely practical and can even be more sanitary than plastic options if they’re given the proper care. One style of wooden cutting board we’re particularly fond of is end grain boards. This type of cutting board brings plenty of aesthetics, but also comes with several practical benefits as well.
End grain boards are made from pieces of wood that are cut against the growth of the tree rings. Instead of displaying the grain of the wood lengthwise the way that a plank of floorboard would, end grain boards showcase the tree rings. This type of wood is commonly used for butcher block countertops, but another popular use for end grain boards is to make cutting boards.
End grain cutting boards have quite a few benefits outside of appearances. When you use end grain boards as a cutting surface, your knife slides between the fibers of the wood, which helps it keep a sharp edge for longer. End grain boards also have the ability to self-repair small scratches and nicks, since the fibers are often able to bounce back into place after chopping or cutting.
