Here at WKS Wood Design, one of our most consistently popular items is our handcrafted wooden cutting boards. We use attractive, high-quality wood with natural burls and other variation to create pieces that are both beautiful and practical, which makes them a great choice for any home. Our cutting boards are pieces that you can show off with pride, but like any other beautiful thing, your board will need some care and maintenance in order to keep looking its best. In this article, our team will go over how to clean and care for wooden cutting boards in order to preserve their unique beauty and keep them food safe.

How to Maintain Wooden Cutting Boards

  • Cleaning- The most basic step for maintaining wooden cutting boards is to clean them after each use. If you’ve only used your board to chop fruits and vegetables, then a scrub with hot soapy water is all that’s needed, but if you’ve chopped raw meat on it, you may want to rub it with hydrogen peroxide or a very diluted bleach solution in order to protect against bacterial contamination. No matter how you choose to clean your board, though, never soak it in water, or the wood will crack and warp.
  • Oiling- The only other thing you need to do to care for our cutting boards is to oil them from time to time in order to prevent the wood from drying out and to maintain the surface. To do this, you can use mineral oil, another food-grade oil, a brand-name cutting board cream, or your own homemade mixture. Simply apply a little oil to a clean, soft cloth or paper towel and rub it into the board, adding more as necessary until you have an even coat. Let the oil soak into the board overnight, then wipe it down in the morning.
